"Chi invece mi rinnegherà davanti agli uomini, anch'io lo rinnegherò davanti al padre mio che è nei cieli."

Nel contesto di Matteo 10,33, Gesù sta esortando, e minacciando i 12 a non aver paura degli uomini, ma solo di temere Dio e di proclamare la loro fede nella divinità del Figlio dell'uomo, che sulla terra ha il potere di perdonare i peccati (Mt 9,6) e che manda i 12 a testimoniare in Israele, nonostante le persecuzioni (Mt 10,23) che il Figlio dell'uomo è davvero il Figlio di Dio (cfr. Mt 4,3-6; 8,29; 14,33; 16,16; 26,63; 27,40). Il Figlio dell'uomo non è creduto (Mt 11,19) anche se solo lui è e si dichiara esplicitamente il Signore del sabato e di qualsiasi altra legge (Mt 12,8).

Il vangelo di Matteo ha come tema chiave, Gesù di Nazaret è il Messia promesso, di cui parlano le profezie; è il re dei giudei. Sarà proprio Pietro a rinnegare Gesù (Mt 26,34)
Mt 10,33 non ha paralleli stretti né in Marco né in Giovanni. il versetto più prossimo è Luca 12,9 ("ma chi mi rinnegherà davanti agli uomini, sarà rinnegato davanti agli angeli di Dio) che è un'esortazione di Gesù ai discepoli ("Io vi dico" in Lc 12,8) a professare pubblicamente la loro fede in lui, come "Figlio dell'uomo" (Luke 5,24; 6,5.22; 7,34; 9,22.26; 11,30; 12,8.10.40; 17,22.24.26.30; 18,8.31; 19,10; 21,27.36; 22,22.48.69). E che Il Figlio dell'uomo sarà comunque rinnegato e tradito, non solo da Pietro (Lc 24:7 e diceva: “Bisogna che il Figlio dell'uomo sia consegnato in mano ai peccatori, sia crocifisso e risorga il terzo giorno”».)

Sia da Mt 10,33 che da Lc 12,8 e contesti sembra che Gesù debba applicare la legge del taglione, sia in positivo che in negativo (cfr. Mt 10,32 "Perciò chiunque mi riconoscerà davanti agli uomini, anch'io lo riconoscerò davanti al Padre mio che è nei cieli" che, con qualche variante significativa, corrisponde a Lc 12,8: "Io vi dico: chiunque mi riconoscerà davanti agli uomini, anche il Figlio dell'uomo lo riconoscerà davanti agli angeli di Dio").
